About Street Mediation

I have been mediating matters here in Cardiff since the year 2000. At first, mediations were squeezed in between Medical Malpractice and Personal Injury matters that consumed most of my time. By the year 2004, I had seen the light and realized I had done pretty much everything I wanted to do in general civil litigation and that the draw to being a mediator was in reality a calling that I could not resist. Although I had received excellent primary and advanced mediator training at Pepperdine University in 1999, I felt then and now that being a mediator is not entirely teachable. At a minimum, being good at it is definitely the combination of subject matter mastery, people skills and other character traits that allow one to connect with a wide variety of personalities and most importantly, earn their trust; attorneys and their clients.

Now, some 13 plus years and over 2000 mediations down the road, I still look forward to every mediation with as much enthusiasm as the first one. To make this sort of work even more enjoyable, I sometime receive feed back like the following from an attorney who appeared in a 2004 mediation:

“We felt that you handled this mediation perfectly and my client was quite satisfied with the result—though I promise that she would not have paid a dime more. In a respectful, supportive and artful way, you forced (one of the parties) to acknowledge the flaws in his arguments. Your sense of humor kept everyone in a positive spirit. I will admit that I have generally not been satisfied with court-ordered mediation. I feel strongly that there are attorneys, judges and mediators, and there is not a natural cross-over among those professions. You clearly have approached mediation as a distinct profession and are highly skillful at it. I look forward to our paths crossing again.” Douglas Dexter, Esq.

So, there you have it. I love what I do and look forward to assisting you and your clients in resolving their matters. Please feel free to communicate with any of the references that are posted on this site.
